Leaf Icon Who are the Friends of Woodlands?

A group of people who support Woodlands in a variety of ways. Its membership is drawn from active serving volunteers who automatically become members of the Friends group by their involvement as volunteers for Woodlands, and from those people who wish to join the Friends as paid members, without the involvement as volunteers. In addition, everyone who has ceased active voluntary work within the previous 12 months will become an honorary member of the ‘Friends of Woodlands’.

Leaf Icon What do the Friends of Woodlands do?

The Friends of Woodlands exist to:

  • raise and promote awareness and support of Woodlands and multiple sclerosis in the local community, including liaising with the MS Society branches, Regional Committee, the local MS community and statutory services
  • improve the quality of the guests’ stays at Woodlands by encouraging volunteer involvement in Woodlands and its social and fundraising programme
  • raise funds for the sole use of Woodlands benefting the guests, including the provision of additional equipment and amenities
  • raise such funds by promoting and taking part in social and other functions, and securing the use of the Melrosegate Charity Shop premises to take and collect unwanted saleable items from willing members of the general public and the selling of such donated goods for funds
  • actively participate in the decision-making process on how best to make use of the funds raised by the Friends of Woodlands.

Leaf Icon What happens to the money raised?

Most of the funds raised by the Friends group comes via the Melrosegate Charity Shop which was set up by the group in 1996. Since then, over £400,000 has been generated - all of which has been spent at Woodlands.

    Examples of items purchased include:

    • Minibuses

    • Physiotherapy Equipment

    • Sluice Equipment

    • Shower Chairs

    • Reclining Chairs

    • Marquee

For several years, the Friends have covered the costs of the outings and trips programme which Woodlands runs for visiting guests, as well as the costs of providing a Snoezelen Therapy services.

In 2009, the Friends are supporting the costs of a nurse at Woodlands.
