What do we offer?
Accommodation
Woodlands is a one-storey building set in 3½ acres of mature grounds, and has been specifically designed for the physically disabled.
The 24 single ground floor bedrooms are all wheelchair accessible with en-suite facilities, adjustable profiling beds, telephone, radio and TV. 18 rooms have showers and 20 are fitted with overhead electrically operated hoists. There are also mobile hoists for use in other parts of the building. There is a shower room and two bathrooms with height adjustable baths. The designated physiotherapy suite has a treatment room with a range of specialist equipment as well as a hydrotherapy pool.
Communal areas consist of the main lounge with a TV, music system and bar, a separate designated smoking room, and a quiet sun lounge which houses a small gift shop. These rooms all open onto the large south-facing patio at the rear of the building, and from there, wheelchair paths lead to the small pond and gazebo and other wooded areas in the grounds. The dining room opens out onto a smaller patio area, and meals can be taken ‘al fresco’ in fine weather. There is a spacious reception area where guests also sit, and a relatives’ room at the front of the building, which Guests can use for activities or private meetings.
Our fully equipped multi-sensory Snoezelen room is available to eligible Guests whom, it is felt, would benefit from this experience. There is no charge for the use of the Snoezelen though donations are welcomed, all of which will be put towards the continued provision of the service.
The building is protected by an addressable fire alarm system and the equipment is modern and well maintained to provide a safe and secure environment. A nurse call system is installed throughout with various call functions, including pressure pads and voice-activated call boxes.
Care Management
Generous staffing levels allow us to provide total care for people with any level of dependency including complex nursing needs, and enable care needs to be met in a relaxed and informal atmosphere. Special diets are catered for on request.
Comprehensive pre-admission information is obtained from Guests and their carers, GPs and other health and social care professionals to enable us to devise an individual care plan, which encourages them to achieve their full potential. It sets out the care objectives for the stay and incorporates any necessary risk assessments.
We ensure that continuity of care is provided through the full reporting system at each handover shift, so that all staff are familiarised with the special needs and requirements of each Guest. Care plans are reviewed at each admission, and guests can have access to their care records on request.
Complementary Therapies
Physiotherapy & Hydrotherapy
Each Guest has an individual assessment carried out by one of our trained physiotherapists and an individual treatment programme for hydrotherapy and physiotherapy is drawn up. We try to ensure that Guests can receive at least one hydrotherapy session and two physiotherapy sessions in the week, if appropriate. Hydrotherapy programmes are held each weekday morning, and Physiotherapy programmes take place each weekday afternoon (except Fridays).
A weekly group Pilates session has also been offered recently, and we hope to continue this into the future.
These treatments are included in the weekly charge.
In addition, for a small extra charge, Guests can choose from Reflexology, Acupuncture and Indian Head Massage treatments, or a session with the Beautician and Hairdresser who visit each week.
Social and Entertainment Programme
We offer a varied programme of outings and leisure activities throughout the year. We aim to give Guests the opportunity for at least one trip a week - perhaps shopping or a pub lunch or to visit local places of interest. In-house entertainment is arranged each week and the bar opens most evenings to liven the social scene. (View a Typical week.doc (28 kb)
activities and entertainments). Our enthusiastic group of volunteers assists with these services. Find out more about volunteering at Woodlands.
Members of the pastoral care group lead a non-denominational weekly reflection meeting, and most Sundays Guests may attend the local Anglican or Catholic Church.
We have access to six vehicles adapted to take wheelchairs, but for safety reasons, we are not able to take Guests out in electrically powered chairs in the four larger vehicles which are used for excursions. Manual wheelchairs are therefore utilised on all Woodlands’ excursions, and there are a number available for Guests to borrow. Our two smaller vehicles may carry electric wheelchairs, and these are used to deliver and collect Guests to and from the railway station on departure and arrival. Guests with outdoor chairs who are able and wish to visit the local community unescorted can do so unassisted, or by booking a wheelchair access taxi at their own expense.
Visitors
Family or friends wishing to visit guests will be welcomed at any time during reasonable social hours, but are asked to respect care routines and mealtimes.
Staff and Volunteers
There are approximately 90 staff and 120 volunteers employed throughout all the departments at Woodlands under the leadership of the centre manager, Paula Rawding RGN.
An accredited Investor in People and Investor in Volunteers, Woodlands is committed to ensuring that all our friendly and caring staff are trained to understand the specialist needs of people with MS. All staff receive thorough orientation when they first commence employment, to ensure that they are familiar with all fire, safety, infection control and care procedures, as well as the policies and philosophy of the Respite Centre. New members of the nursing and care team are given rigorous training in moving and handling before they participate in hands-on care.
